State Announces Determination for Natural Resource Damage Assessment for Former New Jersey Zinc-Mobil Chemical Site
SPRINGFIELD, IL – The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) and Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan today announced the completion of a mandated Preassessment Screen Determination and a Notice of Intent to perform a detailed injury assessment related to the former New Jersey Zinc/Mobil Chemical Superfund site located in DePue, Illinois.

The former New Jersey Zinc/Mobil Chemical plant property and surrounding areas were placed on the National Priorities List (NPL), or Superfund, by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 1999.  The site includes a former zinc-smelting facility, sulfuric acid plant, paint pigment plant, and fertilizer plant. The DePue facility was operated from 1903 to 1989.  Waste disposal and other activities at the site released hazardous substances to the environment, including to Lake DePue, and to the Village of DePue, including residential properties.

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency is the lead agency for the cleanup of the Site. The IEPA and IDNR, the Illinois agencies which serve as trustees in accordance with Natural Resource Damage Assessment (NRDA) regulations, prepared the Preassessment Screen Determination (PAS) for the former New Jersey Zinc/Mobil Chemical site.

Federal regulations require preparation of the PAS to provide a review that ensures that there is a reasonable probability of making a successful claim before monies and efforts are expended in carrying out a Natural Resource Damage Assessment.  The IEPA and IDNR have made the determination that the criteria specified in NRDA regulations have been met, that there is a reasonable probability of making a successful claim for damages, and that an assessment of natural resource damages related to releases of hazardous substances from the site is warranted.

The Preassessment Screen Determination document is available for public viewing at the Selby Township Library District, 101 Depot St. in DePue, or online through the IDNR website at this link: http://www.dnr.illinois.gov/programs/NRDA/Pages/WhatsNew.aspx
