Illinois Legacy Collection Bicentennial Celebration and Open House Set for Dec. 3
Illinois State Museum Research and Collections Center to Display Rarely Seen Artifacts
SPRINGFIELD, IL – The Illinois State Museum is preparing to celebrate the Illinois Bicentennial by putting the best of its Illinois Legacy Collection of 13.5 million objects on display in an exhibition to open next summer – and the Museum will preview the exhibition on Sunday, Dec. 3 in Springfield.

From the jewels of the collection to rarely-seen artifacts, the exhibition will tell the story of the place now known as Illinois and its people, from 500 million years ago until present day.

The public will have the opportunity to preview some of the objects selected for the coming exhibition as the Museum kicks off a year of Bicentennial programming with these special events on Statehood Day on Dec. 3.

From 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., the public is invited to see the Museum’s collections areas at the ISM Research and Collections Center on East Ash in Springfield. Visitors will be able to walk through the Museum’s collections areas and speak with Museum staff and curators. After the public open house, Illinois State Museum Society members are invited to a members-only open house and reception at the Research and Collections Center from 2:00-3:00 p.m.

Also on Sunday, Dec. 3, the public is welcome to visit the Illinois State Museum’s main facility in the Capitol Complex from 12:00 noon to 4:30 p.m. to see a special preview of the Bicentennial exhibition on the second floor. In celebration of the kickoff of the Bicentennial year, Illinois State Museum admission will be free for all visitors on Dec. 3.

The ISM Research and Collections Center is located at 1011 East Ash St. in Springfield.  The Illinois State Museum is located at 502 S. Spring St. in Springfield.
