Embarras River Waterfowl

Description: In 2011, the State of Illinois retained ownership of approximately 2,200 acres of property southeast of Lawrenceville in Lawrence County. The Embarras River Bottoms State Habitat Area (ERBSHA), is comprised of many community types, including upland forest, old field-scrub/shrub, 16 man-made created wetlands, floodplain forest, and oxbows of the former channel of the Embarras River. The Embarras River bisects the property. 
Acres open for Hunting:  Currently, 535 acres of the property are open to hunting and fishing on the south side of Billett Road. Additional acreage will be opened as the property is developed.
Location7 miles southeast of Lawrenceville on the south side of Billett Road in Lawrence County (see map). 
No hunting is allowed north of Billet Road.  Access is available on Billett Road.

Area Regulations
: Statewide rules and regulations apply at this site, unless otherwise specified.
  1. Windshield cards are required for these species. These are available online at https://dnr2.illinois.gov/windshieldcard/. Navigate to hunting/trapping, and then "public hunting areas" to print these permits. Hunters will be required to return to this website prior to February 15th of each year to record harvest information. Failure to submit data will result in loss of hunting privileges for the following year. Permit must be displayed in vehicle window.
  2. Vehicles must remain on designated roads and parking areas. No off-road vehicle use allowed. No camping is allowed on site.
  3. Severe weather and safety conditions can result in closing all or part of the area.
  4. Hunters under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
  5. All waterfowl hunting will be closed during Deer Firearm and Muzzleloader seasons.
  6. Duck and Goose during regular duck season (South Zone):
Hunt areas will be available to hunters through the Public Duck and Goose Hunting Area Permit, an online pre-season lottery.  Instructions and an online application are available at: http://www.dnr.illinois.gov/hunting/watrfowl/Pages/onlinePermitApplication.aspx. Two (2) permits will be drawn for each day hunting is allowed (Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday). Each permit holder will be allowed to bring up to 3 additional hunters or non-hunters. Permit holder must have permit in his possession while in the field.
Permits will be issued for either Site 1 or Site 2 (see map).  Site 1 is west of Embarras River and south of Billet Road.  Site 2 is east of Embarras River and south of Billett Road. 
Hunters may arrive at hunt sites 1 hour prior to legal shooting time until 1:00 p.m. Hunters must remove all hunting material and vacate by 3:00 p.m.  Walk in only – no watercraft or off-road vehicle use allowed.  Wading decoy carts are recommended.  This area is prone to flooding and might become inaccessible.
Early Teal and Early Goose
Hunters may hunt anywhere south of Billett Road. All statewide regulations apply.  Walk-in only – no watercraft or off-road vehicle use allowed.  Wading decoy carts are recommended.  This area is prone to flooding and might become inaccessible.
