Group Hike with Friends of the Canal
The Friends of the Canal is a non-profit, volunteer group that supports the survival and development of the Hennepin Canal State Park and its trails. The Friends have generously donated historic photographs to the visitor center and their time in such organized activities as trash clean-ups along the canal.
They partake in a group hike of the canal’s trails once a month, which is OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. Hikes begin at one lock or bridge and end at another. They organize a carpool to return to their starting point, so you can make it back to your vehicle without walking back the distance. Come trek the canal trails with them any month. Their vast knowledge of the canal and its history makes this opportunity the closest one can get to a guided tour of the Hennepin Canal trail system.
The May 2018 hike will begin at Bridge 6 (Lock 11) and end at Lock 6. Bridge 6 and Lock 11 are just north of Tiskilwa. The hike is approximately 4.6 miles. You may go your own pace and turn around at any point if you do not wish to hike the full distance.
There are no fees to join the hikes and membership to the Friends of the Canal is not required. Guests are encouraged to dress weather appropriate and bring their own bottle of water.
