Marcia and Ken Polhamus to be inducted into Illinois Outdoor Hall of Fame January 31
Longtime hunter safety instructors promote youth hunting
SPRINGFIELD, IL – A Galena couple who have introduced hundreds of Illinois children to safe hunting practices and the thrill of wild turkey and deer hunting will be inducted into the Illinois Outdoor Hall of Fame at the annual Illinois Conservation Foundation (ICF) Outdoor Hall of Fame Banquet on Thursday, January 31 at the Drury Lane Conference Center in Oakbrook Terrace.

Marcia and Ken Polhamus are longtime Illinois Department of Natural Resources volunteer hunter safety education instructors, host a number of ICF youth hunts, and volunteer as Illinois coordinators of the National Wild Turkey Federation’s JAKES youth program.

“Marcia and Ken Polhamus are among Illinois’ leading advocates for the cause of our ‘Leave No Child Inside’ initiative to get youth outdoors for hunting, fishing, hiking, camping and other ways of getting out of the house,” said Illinois Department of Natural Resources Director Marc Miller, who serves as chairman of the board of the ICF.  “The Polhamuses always remind us that ‘it’s all about the kids,’ and their efforts to help children experience hunting and a safe outdoors experience are helping protect our state’s great hunting heritage for many years to come.”

The Polhamuses – whose own sons began hunting at an early age – have made a mission of introducing kids to the excitement of hunting, while the youngsters’ parents join them for the youth hunts conducted since 2010 at the ICF’s Torstenson Youth Conservation Education Center farm near Pecatonica in Winnebago County.  They have also taught safe hunting practices and conservation stewardship to hundreds of youth and adults as volunteer hunter education instructors, while providing support and donating equipment to the Illinois Conservation Police to enhance safety in outdoor recreation and natural resources protection.

The Illinois Outdoor Hall of Fame Banquet, including a reception, dinner, induction ceremony and auction, begins at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 31 at the Drury Lane Conference Center in Oakbrook Terrace.  Proceeds from the Hall of Fame Banquet assist in funding Illinois Conservation Foundation youth scholarships. For reservations or more information, contact the Illinois Conservation Foundation, One Natural Resources Way, Springfield, IL 62702-1271, phone 217-785-2003, or check the ICF website at www.ilcf.org.
