Free Fishing Days: The 2012 Illinois Free Fishing Days are scheduled for June 8-11. During Illinois Free Fishing Days, anyone may fish without the need to have a sport fishing license, inland trout stamp or salmon stamp.
Two Rivers Family Fishing Fair: Families are invited to the 21st annual Two Rivers Family Fishing Fair on Sat., June 9 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at Pere Marquette State Park in Grafton. Fishing poles, bait and supplies are provided during the free event, with information stations, educational activities, music, and entertainment. Firearm Deer Permit Applications: Resident and non-resident deer hunters can apply now for the second lottery drawing for 2012 Illinois Firearm Deer and Muzzleloader-only Deer permits. The deadline to apply for the second lottery is June 30 (note this is an earlier deadline for second lottery applications than in past years). Apply Now for Non-Resident Archery Deer Permits: The online lottery application period is now open for Non-Resident Illinois Archery Combination Deer permits for the 2012-13 deer season. The deadline to apply is June 30. Non-resident hunters can apply for the lottery through DNR Direct Online License Sales at this link: www.dnr.illinois.gov/online
or by phone at 1-888-6PERMIT (1-888-673-7648). Non-residents may apply for one combination archery permit per season. Non-resident archery hunters will be unable to purchase an over-the-counter (OTC) combination archery deer permit after the season begins on Oct. 1 if they have previously obtained an antlerless-only archery deer permit. Antlerless-only archery permits will be available throughout the season OTC at local license agents, by phone or through DNR Direct Online License Sales. The upcoming Illinois archery deer season is Oct. 1, 2012-Jan. 20, 2013 (except closed in firearm deer counties on Nov. 16-18 and Nov. 29-Dec. 2). Fall Turkey Permits: Permit applications are now being accepted from Illinois residents for the first lottery for 2012 Illinois Fall Shotgun Wild Turkey season. The season dates are Oct. 20-28. The application deadline for the first lottery drawing (Illinois residents only) is July 2. Hunters may apply online through DNR Direct at www.dnr.illinois.gov/online

Science Series: Attend the next Illinois State Museum Science Series program on ‘Two Centuries On: Historical Archaeology and the War of 1812’ on Wed., June 13 at 7 p.m. at the museum’s Research and Collections Center in Springfield. Presented by Mark C. Branstner of the Illinois State Archaeological Survey, the program will look at America’s “second war of independence” and its profound effect on the young nation. Archaeological testing has shed new light on what is an otherwise underappreciated chapter in Illinois history. Pontiac High School: The IDNR salutes the faculty, staff and students at Pontiac Township High School, who are working with IDNR biologists on a project to reestablish the alligator snapping turtle in its historic home range in Illinois. Operation Endangered Species started in October of 2011 and Pontiac High students are well on their way to making a difference in this species for future generations. Their efforts were recognized with a resolution in the Illinois General Assembly last month declaring May 18 Endangered Species Day in Illinois. Wingshooting Clinics: The IDNR and participating partners sponsor wingshooting clinics at sites throughout Illinois to help improve the shooting skills of participants. Youth/Women's clinics are designed to teach participants basic firearm safety and the fundamentals of wingshooting. Hunter clinics are designed to enhance the wingshooting skills of hunters and provide sound wingshooting practice techniques. The clinics are conducted on weekends throughout the spring, summer and early fall. Sportsman’s Raffle: Buy your tickets today for the 2012 Illinois Conservation Foundation Sportsman’s Raffle. Tickets are $100 each and prizes – including a grand prize of up to $100,000 – will be presented at a drawing in Sangamon County on December 6, 2012. Additional “early bird” prizes will be awarded for tickets drawn in Sangamon County on June 7, August 2 and October 4, 2012. Proceeds from the raffle will support youth conservation education and outdoor recreation programs at the ICF Torstenson Family Youth Conservation Education Center in Pecatonica, IL.
