Current Closures of DNR Sites and Areas

This page lists current closures of DNR Sites and Areas, by geographic region.

Notices are updated on a continuous basis, so please check before you start your trip.

During hunting season, many sites are closed or partially closed to the public. Public should contact the site directly for closure updates and/or winter hours before going to site.​​​​​​​​

 

 Region 1 - Northwestern Illinois

      • Anderson Lake State Fish & Wildlife Area - Entire area is closed to camping and fishing due to flooding.

      • Big River State Forest - Lower campground is closed - 15 camp sites  

      • Castle Rock State Park - Canoe camping area is closed for the season; will reopen Spring 2016

      • Henderson County – Gladstone Lake, also known as Henderson County, is partially open. Facilities that are available: picnic shelter, privies, water, and a partially opened campground (approximately 10 campsites available), and shoreline fishing. Please call Big River State Forest prior to visiting Gladstone Lake – 309-374-2496
      • Hennepin Canal Closures: 
        • The section from Lock 26 to I-80, 4.8 miles, continues to remain "Closed". No repairs have been completed on this portion of the trail. At Lock 27 just to the west of the Aqueduct 8, (Green River), there is a breach in the levee some 75' - 80' wide and 15' - 20' deep. Other portions of this trail segment are not completely washed out, but eroded leaving "drop offs" to the point where in some spots the trail is only 4' - 5' wide.
        • Due to the replacement of the I-80 bridge over the Hennepin Canal (just west of the Visitors Center), this section of trail is temporarily closed.
        • The wells at Lock 21, Lock 22 and Lock 24 are not working; due to budget constraints it is unknown when these will be repaired.  The only potable water available is at the Visitors Center well. 
      • Illini State Park Closures:  
        •  Wildcat Bog day use area is closed until further notice.  Sunrise Council, a CCC shelter, is closed indefinitely.  Please call before visiting the park.   
        • Mallard Bay, River Meadows and Ancient Oaks shelters are closed for the season; open for rental May 1, 2016.
        • Camping:  Great Falls open with shower building closed for the season, Whitetail Campground is closed for the season.
      •  Jubilee College State Park - The following areas will be closed:  Camping Loop C and Turkey Hollow Picnic Shelter.
      • LaSalle Lake - Closed to fishing and access October 15, 2015 thru March 15, 2016.
      • Lowden - The Blackhawk statue is currently undergoing renovations and is covered in a tarp. Renovations are expected to be completed summer 2016.  
      • Lowden - The boat docks at the Lowden boat ramp north of Oregon on Highway 2 have been taken out but the ramp is open.
      • Mackinaw State Fish & Wildlife Area -  Road is closed for the season; will reopen Spring 2016.
      • Marseilles State Fish and Wildlife Area - closed to hunting and access January 15, 2016.  Reopens for hunting September 1, 2016
      • Matthiessen State Park -  Ziggy and River trails continue to be closed due to trail damage and erosion.  Hiking trails at Matthiessen State Park are OPEN.
      • Pekin Lake – is closed to all vehicle access due to road deterioration, walk-in access is allowed 
      • Rice Lake and Duck Island State Fish & Wildlife Areas - Entire areas are closed to camping and fishing due to flooding.
      • Rock Island Trail – The trail is closed to all traffic from Wyoming (Mile 20) to the Spoon River bridge (Mile 22) and from mile 22.75 to Mile 23.5; both of these closed areas are between Wyoming and Toulon.  The trail is open from Wyoming to Alta.  New closure:  From Streitmatter Road (mile 12.2) to County Line Road (Mile 13.8) between Wyoming and Princeville.
      • Spring Lake State Fish & Wildlife Area - The Pine and Oak campgrounds will be closed for the winter (November 1, 2015 through April 30, 2016).   Rescheduled to reopen on May 1st, 2016.    
      • Starved Rock State Park - All areas are now open.
      • Woodford State Fish & Wildlife Area - Campground closed October 1st, 2015 due to waterfowl season; scheduled to reopen April 1, 2016.

 Region 2 - Northeastern Illinois

    • Des Plaines State Fish & Wildlife Area – Due to water across the road, the gate to the boat launch, picnic area, and parking lots #26-30 has been closed as of about 11:30 this morning.  This closure affects fishermen looking to fish the backwaters of the Kankakee River as well as Archery Deer hunters. The boat ramp will reopen in the spring of 2016.  Millikin Lake remains closed. The Class "C" Campground will be closed indefinetly. Areas 9 & 10 are closed due to flooding. 
    • Goose Lake Prairie – Goose Lake Prairie Visitor Center may be closed on weekends due to staffing, please call to verify hours of operation.
    • Heidecke Lake SFWA  Heidecke Lake is closed to goose hunting due to ice and will be closed until further notice.  Hunting fields and Morris wetlands will be closed to the public October 1st through January 17th, 2016; they will be open to hunters.
    • I&M Canal – The trail is closed due to a structural collapse between Gebhard Woods State Park in Morris east to Calhoun St.  We advise that bikers and walkers use the city streets to "go around the block" to bypass the closure.. Snowmobilers may not go on the city streets. A detour for snowmobiles is set up through the park but is only open if Nettle Creek is frozen. The I&M Canal State Trail between the Buffalo Rock Access (west of Ottawa) and Utica is only partially opened. Trail users can only go up to the point of the washout. At that point, they will need to return in the same direction they came. 
    • Kankakee River –  The visitor center is closed until further notice. Boat launches may intermittently be closed due to high water. Horseback riding stables are closed. Some of the restrooms may be closed due to maintenance issues. Potawatomi & Chippewa Campgrounds will be closed for the 2016 season due to improvement projects. The main park closes at 6:00 PM. Equestrian campground has no water available. Reservations on ReserveAmerica.com are highly recommended.
    • Momence Wetlands - the boat ramp is closed.
    • Moraine Hills - is closed due to icy road conditions.
    • Volo Bog - is closed due to icy road conditions.
    • William Powers - is closed due to icy road conditions and high winds.

 Region 3 - East Central Illinois

    • Clinton Lake State Recreation Area – The dock at West Side boat access is closed pending repairs.  Boaters can continue to use the ramp to launch. The Waterfowl Refuge Area (from the DeWitt Bridge East to the Rt. 48 Bridge) will close by 1:00 pm on October 9th, 2015 and will re-open no later than 3:00 pm on March 31st, 2016.  The shower buildings are now closed for the  season.  North Fork fish cleaning station is closed indefinitely.  Mascoutin/Main Park fish cleaning station is now closed for the season.   Boondocks Grill & Bait Concession and the beach are closed for the season.
    • Eagle Creek State Park –   The high water boat ramp is now in use, visitors should use caution when launching due to floating debris in the lake. Illini Trail is currently closed due to high water. Camping is available, call ahead for conditions prior to visiting 217/756-8260. The Fish Cleaning Station is open for the season.  The remaining trails are open, weather dependent. The golf course is closed for the season.
    • Fox Ridge State Park –   The North Canoe Launch is temporarily closed due to flash flooding and the South Canoe Launch is close for the season.  Hurricane Pond is closed to fishing until further notice due to extreme fish kills from the harsh winter conditions in 2013/2014. The horse trail is open for the season. Nature's Corner is temporarily closed with a bridge out on Acorn Avenue affecting 1/2 mile of trail. Due to damage from a fallen tree, the Monkey Bars and Hand Walk Bar are closed on the fitness trail until further notice. Camping is available now, however the shower building will close November 2nd and the Brick Pavilion and Cabins will close November 1st for the season.  There will be limited water in the campground after November 2nd.
    • Hidden Springs – Big Tree Trail is closed indefinitely due to a large fallen tree from storm damage. Oak Ridge Hiking trail is closed indefinitely due to a bridge washout. Hickory and Sassafras ponds are closed to fishing until further notice due to extreme fish kills from the harsh winter conditions in 2013/2014. Water hydrants in the park will be limited after November 6th for the season.  The class C campground will remain open year around.  Rolling Meadows Shelter will close for season November 6th.
    • Kickapoo –   The Mountain Bike Trails are now open, weather dependent. Pond 6 area road is closed indefinitely.  Kickapoo Landing and Boat Concession is now closed for the season.  The shower buildings and dump station are now closed for the season.  Water is off for the winter however, limited campsites with electric access only are available year around.
    • Lincoln Trail Homestead – The day use access road is now closed for the season. Water is off and restroom facilities are closed for the season. 
    • Lincoln Trail State Park - The restaurant/concession and bait shop will close for the season on October 31st. The Class A campground area is closed for the Winter - Primitive camping is available year around. Water is off and the shower building is closed for the season.
    • Middle Fork SFWA –     Clean up operations continue due to flash flooding  and other areas will remain closed until further notice. Call ahead for trail and camping conditions prior to visiting 217/442-4915. Water is off for the winter.
    • Moraine View State Recreation Area –  The beach is closed for the season.  The main and primitive campgrounds are open.  The shower building will close for the season on November 2nd.  The dump station remains open at this time. The equestrian trails and horseback camp will close November 3rd for the season. Timber Trails concession is closed for the season, call 309/287-6879 for details.   Old Orchard group camp is closed indefinitely. Gibson's Concession will be open Wednesday - Sunday through December.
    • Shelbyville –  The following ponds are closed to fishing until further notice due to extreme fish kills from the harsh winter conditions in 2013/2014; Elder and Johnson Ponds. Wood Duck Pond is now open to fishing. The following access areas are temporarily closed due to recent flooding, high water levels and freezing and thawing conditions:  Andres Bottom Access, Baine Hill Access, Bethany Boat Ramp closed - use high water boat access, Cook's Bridge Access, County Pit Access, Denham Pit Access, Eden Street Access, Elder Pond Access, Fishhook Access, Oathout Parking Lot, South Dunn Access, Hand Trap Range Road, Jonathan Creek Boat Access, McGee Waterfowl Area, Old Nelson Boat Access, South Asa Access and Strickland Boat Access
    • Spitler Woods –  Site is open to the public for trail access, weather dependent.  Shelter reservations dates are available beginning April 1st (shelters are closed November 1st through March 31st annually). Water is off and restroom facilities are now closed for the  season. Twisted Sister Bridge area is currently closed to the public for renovations re-opening TBD.
    • Walnut Point State Park – Concession and shower buildings are closed for the season. 
    • Weldon Springs State Park – The concession/restaurant is closed. The Black Locust Group Camp is closed until further notice. Beaver Dam Trail is currently closed due to a foot bridge wash out.  A collapsed footbridge on Lakeside Trail, just South of the campground is closed indefinitely.  The shower building, campground dump station and all water hydrants are closed for the season.
    • Wolf Creek State Park – The high water boat ramps is now in use,  visitors should use caution when launching due to floating debris in the lake. The horse campground and trails are closed for the season.  The Wolf Creek Beach is closed for the season. Camping is available, please call ahead for conditions prior to visiting 217/756-8260. The Wolf Creek horse concession is closed at this time.  ​ 
 

 Region 4 - West Central Illinois

    • Beaver Dam State Park –  The Concession area is closed until further notice.  The fish cleaning station and dump station have been winterized  but remain open for use.
    • Eldon Hazlet State Park - the majority of the site is open.  This includes the campground, Campground store, Hazlet Cottages on Carlyle Lake and the day use areas.  Boat access at Allen Branch and Peppenhorst will remain closed.
    • Fall Creek Rest Area –  Visitors are reminded to take all litter with them.
    • Frank Holten State Park –  The Lighthouse Restaurant is open for business, offering a Friday Fish Fry as well as a Sunday Brunch.  Call (618) 398-9958 for days and hours of operation.
    • Horseshoe Lake State Park (Madison County) -  Campground is closed for the season and scheduled to re-open on May 1, 2016. 
    • Illinois Caverns – Site is closed due to White Nose Syndrome. Closures will be reviewed quarterly. Complete details has been listed in separate closure notice.
    • Jim Edgar Panther Creek –  The Equestrian and mountain bike trails are closed for the season. The office will be closed on Sundays and Mondays until further notice.   Please call the office for additional trail updates (217-452-7741).
    • Kaskaskia River Area –  The hours at Baldwin Lake are 7:00am - 5:00pm effective November 1st through February 16th, when the hours will lbe 6:00am to 7:00pm.  The horse trails at Baldwin Lake are closed for the season and scheduled to re-open on April 15, 2016.  
    • Nauvoo State Park – The shower facility, museum  and the dump station are closed for the season. 
    • Peabody River King - is open except the road past Beaver Lake due to flood damage. 
    • Pere Marquette State Park –    ​Please contact the Visitor Center at 618-786-2555 for further updates. The Visitor Center hours of operation are Monday thru Saturday 8:30am - 4:00pm.  The shower house in the Class A campground has been winterized for the season; this includes the fresh water hydrant at the Class A campground dump station, which remains open.  The Class A campground shower house is closed for the season.  The large Riverside shelter, small Riverside shelter and the Stone shelter are closed as a result of the flood; this includes the vault toilets at the harbor.  Approxiimately 125 yards of Sam Vadalabene bike trail are closed and barricaded due to the collapse of a Windsor retaining wall. The site has been cleaned and debris removed; however, the soil and wall are unstable.
    • Randolph County CA - the equestrian tails are closed for the season to re-open on 4/1/2016
    • Sand Ridge State Forest –  All campgrounds and day use areas are open with the exception of the snow mobile trails, which are closed due to lack of snow.  Please call the office for daily trail updates after 9am:  309-597-2212 
    • Sangchris Lake -  Deer Run and Pheasant Run campgrounds are closed for the season; however,  Hickory Point campground will remain open all winter with shower facilities.  The fish cleaning station is closed. 
    • Sanganois Conservation Area - the main access road is closed due to flooding.
    • Siloam Springs – The equestrian trails along with the campground are closed for the season;   Hickory campground remains open at this time.
    • Washington County CA - the shower house and concession are closed for the season; however, all campgrounds and cabins remain open throughout the year.
    • Weinberg King State Park – The equestrian trails are closed for the season.​
 

 Region 5 - Southern Illinois

 
    Last updated: 2/10/2016
    • Beall Woods State Park – Tuliptree and upper White Oak are currently open. Schneck, Sweet Gum and Ridgeway are all closed due to mud and debris.
    • Ferne Clyffe - The Horse Trail is closed and re-open May 1, 2016. 
    • Fort Defiance - Closed Due to high water.
    • Fort Massac – The 1802 American Fort will be closed to the public until further notice. Due to flooding of the Ohio River the upland game area road is closed from Hickory Nut trail head to the park.
    • Giant City State Park – The shower building in the campground area has been closed for the winter. It will be re-opened in the spring. The shower building in the Equestrian campground is closed. The Horse Trail and the Equestrian campground is closed and re-open May 1, 2016.
    • Golconda Marina –  Rauchfuss Hill is currently closed.
    • Newton Lake – The mountain bike trail is closed indefinitely due to washed out areas.​ 
    • Ramsey Lake - Effective December 1, 2015 - White Oak (class A) campground will become a class C campground - no water or electricity. The shower house in White Oak Campground is closed for the season and will re-open April 1, 2016. Hickory Grove (class C), Pine Bend (class D), Crabapple Ridge (youth group) and the Group (class B/E) campgrounds are closed for the winter season and will re-open April 1, 2016. Equestrian (class C) campground and horse trails are closed for the winter season and will re-open April 1, 2016.  ***Ramsey Lake will not be selling hunting/fishing licenses until further notice, Thank you***
    • Red Hills - The Trace Inn is currently closed. Water to the campground has currently been shut off due to a water line leak and will remain off until spring 2016. For additional information please call the park office at 618-936-2469.
    • Stephen A Forbes - The Lakeside Restaurant and Marina are closed for the season. The equestrian campground and trail is closed for the season and will re-open next spring at the close of spring turkey season (south zone) on May 5, 2016.  The Oak Ridge campground shower building will close for the season on Monday, November 16, 2015 and will re-open next spring. Class A camping rates will be reduced to Class B rates due to no shower house availibilty.
    • Trail of Tears -   The North and South Forest Roads will be closed to vehicle access December 24, 2015 thru May 5, 2016 (end of Spring Turkey season). The Horse Trail is closed and re-open May 1, 2016.
    • Union County Refuge -  Firing line will open for duck hunting on Wednesday, January 13th with the draw one hour before shooting time in the green barn across from the Union County site office.
    • Wayne Fitzgerrell State Park - Class A Campground Hickman's Point loop campsites #32 through #62 will remain open all winter. Bay Area loop, Lookout Point loop, Shady Rest loop and Primitive Camping are now closed; Lakeview loop will close on November 23, 2015;  these sites will remain closed until approximately April 1, 2016. Shelters 1, 2, 3 and 4, along with accompanying day use areas are now closed and will also remain closed until approximately April 1, 2016.
