Current Closures of DNR Sites and Areas

This page lists current closures of DNR Sites and Areas, by geographic region.

Notices are updated on a continuous basis, so please check before you start your trip.

During hunting season, many sites are closed or partially closed to the public. Public should contact the site directly for closure updates and/or winter hours before going to site.


 Region 1 - Northwestern Illinois

      • Anderson Lake State Fish & Wildlife - Closed to camping and boat use, but is open for bank fishing

      • Banner Marsh State Fish & Wildlife Area - East point entrance is closed; all interior roads to the shelter house, boat launch and children's pond are under water. 

      • Big River State Forest– Lower campground is closed – 15 camp sites.

      • Gladstone Lake – Due to moderate flooding and high water, this area is closed until further notice.  
      • Henderson County – Gladstone Lake, also known as Henderson County, is partially open. Facilities that are available: picnic shelter, privies, water, and a partially opened campground (approximately 10 campsites available), and shoreline fishing. Please call Big River State Forest prior to visiting Gladstone Lake – 309-374-2496
      • Hennepin Canal Closures: The area of trail from Lock 3 to Bridge 4, 5.6 miles, is posted "Closed".
        • The section from Lock 26 to I-80, 4.8 miles, continues to remain "Closed". No repairs have been completed on this portion of the trail. At Lock 27 just to the west of the Aqueduct 8, (Green River), there is a breach in the levee some 75' - 80' wide and 15' - 20' deep. Other portions of this trail segment are not completely washed out, but eroded leaving "drop offs" to the point where in some spots the trail is only 4' - 5' wide.
        • Due to the replacement of the I-80 bridge over the Hennepin Canal (just west of the Visitors Center), this section of trail is temporarily closed.
        • The water spicket at the designated camping / day use area at Lock 22 is out of order.  Currently, the only area that has potable water is Lock 21. 
      • Illini State Park –  Ancient Oaks and Wildcat Bog day use areas closed.  Sunrise Council, a CCC shelter, is closed indefinitely.  Please call before visiting the park.    
      • Jubilee College State Park - The following areas will be closed:  Camping Loop C and Turkey Hollow Picnic Shelter. 
      • Lowden - The Blackhawk statue is currently undergoing renovations and is covered in a tarp. Renovations are expected to be completed this fall. 
      • Mackinaw State Fish & Wildlife Area - The canoe access are has been closed due to high water levels.
      • Matthiessen State Park -  The lower canyon trails at the Matthiessen Dells Area are CLOSED until further notice due to flooding and wet conditions.   The equestrian campground and horse trails at Matthiessen are closed due wet conditions.
      • Pekin Lake – is closed to all vehicle access due to road deterioration, walk-in access is allowed.       
      • Rice Lake State Fish & Wildlife Area - is closed to camping and boat use, but is open for bank fishing.
      • Rock Island Trail – The trail is closed to all traffic from Wyoming (Mile 20) to the Spoon River bridge (Mile 22) and from mile 22.75 to Mile 23.5; both of these closed areas as between Wyoming and Toulon.  The trail is open from Wyoming to Alta.  New closure:  From Streitmatter Road (mile 12.2) to County Line Road (Mile 13.8) between Wyoming and Princeville.   
      • Starved Rock State Park - The parking lot, boat ramp, and picnic area clean-up process that was scheduled for the week of July 13th has been delayed due to flooding.   The main lot at Starved Rock, in front of the visitor center, has reopened this morning.  The west picnic areas and boat launch remains CLOSED.  Work begins on those areas next week. 
        ALL hiking trails at Starved Rock State Park... are OPEN. Parking is available at the Starved Rock Lodge on weekdays and in overflow parking lots on weekends. The Starved Rock Visitor Center will remain OPEN with normal business hours of 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Access the Starved Rock Visitor Center via the staircase behind the Starved Rock Lodge. The Starved Rock Lodge will remain OPEN with normal business hours.
        Matthiessen State Park multi-use trails and the lower trail at Cascade Falls will remain CLOSED until further notice due to wet conditions.
        Park officials are urging picnickers to utilize other area state parks in the area such as Matthiessen State Park (2 miles south on Rt. 178), Buffalo Rock State Park (7 miles east on Dee Bennett Road), and Illini State Park ( 20 miles east on I-80).
      • Woodford State Fish & Wildlife Area - closed due to flooding  ​ 



 Region 2 - Northeastern Illinois

    • Des Plaines State Fish & Wildlife Area – The Class "C" Campground will be closed for the 2015 season. Areas 9 & 10 are closed due to flooding. 
    • Gebhard Woods - The campground is closed due to flood damage.
    • Goose Lake Prairie – Goose Lake Prairie Visitor Center may be closed on weekends due to staffing, please call to verify hours of operation.
    • I&M Canal – The canal trail between the 5 mile bridge (west of Morris) and Seneca is closed due to washouts (approximately 5 miles). The Nettle Creek Aqueduct in Morris collapsed during the April flooding. We advise bikers and walkers using city roads to "go around the block" to bypass it. Snowmobilers may not go on the city streets or detour through the park. Where both sections are closed, they must stop and turn around. The I&M Canal State Trail between the Buffalo Rock Access (west of Ottawa) and Utica is closed due to extensive flood damage. Approx. 5 miles. The canal trail between Ottawa and Marseilles is closed due to flooding. Approx. 5 miles.
    • Kankakee River – The equestrian trails are closed due to flooding. The bike trail is closed in areas due to high water and washouts. The east entrance may be closed due to road resurfacing. Boat launches may intermittently be closed due to high water. Horseback riding stables are closed. Some of the restrooms may be closed due to maintenance issues. Potawatomi Campground will be closed for the 2015 season due to improvement projects.  The main park closes at 8:00 PM. Equestrian campground has no water available. Reservations on are highly recommended.

 Region 3 - East Central Illinois

    • Clinton Lake State Recreation Area –   As of 4:00 pm July 31st, 2015, Bridge Construction  near the main park entrance will be complete and the detour of South bound traffic on County Hwy 14 (Randolph St. in DeWitt, IL) will expire. All campground loops are open and water in the campground is on. The shower buildings are open for the season.  North Fork fish cleaning station is closed indefinitely.  Mascoutin/Main Park fish cleaning station is now open.  Boondocks Grill & Bait Concession is open for the season.  The beach will open for the season Memorial Day weekend.
    • Eagle Creek State Park –  Illini Trail is currently closed due to high water.  Camping and shower facilities are available. The lake level is high at this time,  users should be cautious and check ahead for level changes. High water boat ramps are now in use and one courtesy dock is now open to the public. The Fish Cleaning Station is open for the season.  All Trails are open. The golf course is open to the public.
    • Fox Ridge State Park – Due to extreme wet conditions the North Canoe Launch is closed until conditions improve.  Hurricane Pond is closed to fishing until further notice due to extreme fish kills from the harsh winter conditions in 2013/2014. The South canoe launch access area is open.  The horse trail is open for the season. Nature's Corner is temporarily closed with a bridge out on Acorn Avenue affecting 1/2 mile of trail. Due to damage from a fallen tree, the Monkey Bars and Hand Walk Bar are closed on the fitness trail until further notice. Camping the shower building, cabins and pavilion are open for the season
    • Hidden Springs – Big Tree Trail is closed temporarily due to a large fallen tree from storm damage. Oak Ridge Hiking trail is closed indefinitely due to a bridge washout. Hickory and Sassafras ponds are closed to fishing until further notice due to extreme fish kills from the harsh winter conditions in 2013/2014.
    • Kickapoo –  The Mountain Bike Trails are now open. Pond 6 area road is closed due to wet conditions.  Sportsman's Lake Rd and Riverview Rd from I-74 overpass to Cemetery Rd are now open.  Kickapoo Landing and Boat Concession will open April 6th for the season.  Water is on and the dump stations are open.  Shower building #2 and camping are available for the season. Shower Building #1 is closed pending plumbing repairs.
    • Lincoln Trail Homestead – The day use access road is now open for the season. Water is turned on and restroom facilities are now open.
    • Lincoln Trail State Park - The restaurant/concession is open for the season.   All campground areas are open including showers.   Water at the campground is on.
    • Middle Fork SFWA –   Portions of the horse campground and horse trails are now open to the public - clean up operations continue due to flash flooding and other areas will remain closed until further notice. Call ahead for trail and camping conditions prior to visiting 217/442-4915. 
    • Moraine View State Recreation Area – The beach is open; hours of operation will be Friday through Sunday and Holiday Mondays - Noon - 6:00 pm.  The main and primitive campgrounds are now open.  The shower building and dump station are open. The equestrian trails are now open for day riding, Timber Trails concession will open May 16th,  call 309/287-6879 for details.   Old Orchard group camp is closed indefinitely. The horseback camp is open for the season. Gibson's Concession is now open for the season.
    • Shelbyville –  The following ponds are closed to fishing until further notice due to extreme fish kills from the harsh winter conditions in 2013/2014; Elder and Johnson Ponds. Wood Duck Pond is now open to fishing. The following access areas are now open and/or with limited access: Bain Hill Access (closed); Andres Bottom Access; Bethany Boat Ramp - use high water level boat access;  Denham Pit Access; Eden Street Access; Elder Pond Access; Hand Trap Range Road; Oathout Parking Lot; Old Nelson Boat Access; South Asa Access and South Dunn Access.  Areas that are now closed and/or with limited access: Cook's Bridge Access; County Pit Access; Fishhook Access; Jonathan Creek Boat Ramp; McGee Waterfowl Area and Strickland Boat Access.
    • Spitler Woods – Site is open to the public for trail access and shelter reservations. Water is on and restroom facilities are open for the season. Twisted Sister Bridge area is currently closed to the public for renovations to be complete late Summer 2015.
    • Walnut Point State Park – Concession and shower buildings are open for the season. 
    • Weldon Springs State Park – The concession/restaurant is closed. The Black Locust Group Camp is closed until further notice. Beaver Dam Trail is currently closed due to a foot bridge wash out.
    • Wolf Creek State Park – The Horse campground and trails are now open. Call ahead for trail and camping conditions prior to visiting 217/756-8260. The Wolf Creek Beach is now open.  The campground and both shower buildings are open for the season. Boat ramp parking lot repairs are complete with new boat docks and walkways. This area is now open to the public. The lake level is high, users should be cautious and check ahead for level changes. High water boat ramps are now in use.  The fish cleaning and dump stations are open for the season.  The Wolf Creek horse concession is closed at this time.  ​ 

 Region 4 - West Central Illinois

    • Beaver Dam State Park –  The Concession area is closed until further notice.      
    • Carlyle Lake WMA - expected Carlyle Lake crest with no additional rainfall will be 454.05'.  This is 9' over normal summer pool, which is 445'.  Presently, Cox's Bridge and Hitogi Boat ramps are closed along with Parking Lots # 1, 2 & 3.  Most of the area is not engulfed by Carlyle Lake.  The only high round is at East Side Management Area (Eckert's Farm).  Please contact site office at 618-425-3533 for further updates.  
    • Eldon Hazlet State Park - Testing at the Lake has shown that the water meets all state and federal regulations for safe public use.  On June 23, the US Army Corps of Engineers tested 10 samples taken at four separate locations.  The Corps monitors water quality weekly, which is above the Dept of Public Health state guidelines that call for the lake to be tested for e. coli every two weeks.  Allen Branch, Apache (regular ramp) and Peppenhorst boat ramps are currently closed due to the high water levels; however, the Apache high water ramp is currently OPEN for use. The fish cleaning stations are also closed.  The Illini Campground, Hazlet Cottages, Campground Store and public pool are OPEN and have no impact from the high water levels.  Staff anticipates that these areas will remain open for this weekend.  Since additional rain is predicted, it will be re-evaluated daily.  Please call the office at 618-594-3015 for updates.  The Dam Jam and the Carlyle Fireworks Spectacular scheduled for June 27th has been re-scheduled to Labor Day Weekend, due to the high water levels.  Please join us on September 5th for all of the fun in the sun!
    • Fall Creek Rest Area –  Visitors are reminded to take all litter with them.
    • Frank Holten State Park –  Due to flooding, the following pavilions are closed: Grand Marais East AND West, The Court, North View as well as the Fish Derby.  The Lighthouse Restaurant is open for business, offering a Friday Fish Fry as well as a Sunday Brunch.  Call (618) 398-9999 for days and hours of operation.
    • Horseshoe Lake State Park (Madison Cty) - campground is open.
    • Illinois Caverns – Site is closed due to White Nose Syndrome. Closures will be reviewed quarterly. Complete details has been listed in separate closure notice.
    • Jim Edgar Panther Creek –  The Equestrian trails are open at this time. The office will be closed on Sundays and Mondays until further notice.   All mountain bike trails are open for the season as is Questing Hills campground.  Please call the office for additional trail updates (217-452-7741).
    • Kaskaskia River Area –  hours at Baldwin Lake are 6:00am - 9:00pm. The horse trails at Baldwin Lake are closed at this time due to Kaskaskia River flooding.  The Kaskaskia River will be above flood stage, closing the following boat ramps this coming week and weekend: Evansville, Joe's Landing, New Athens Marina, Beck's Landing and the Kaskaskia River Lock and Dam upstream ramp.  The Lock and Dam is closed for all traffic.
    • Mississippi River Area - the following sites are closed due to flooding along the Mississippi and Illinois Rivers: Batchtown; Calhoun Point; Godar Access area/ Diamond; Fuller Lake; Glades Access area; Michael/ Hurricane Access area; Piasa Access area; Red's Landing; Rip Rap Landing; Stump Lake Access area; and Hadley Landing Access area.  The Rosedale office remains open and can be reached by turning south on Route 100 off of Route 16; the highway through Grafton is closed.
    • Nauvoo State Park – The shower facility and the dump station are open for the season.  The  museum is open
    • Pere Marquette State Park –  The stone shelter, the two pavilions located at the Harbor as well as the boat docks, ramps and slips are closed due to flooding.  Access to park is limited with portions of Hwy 100 closed, both North and South of the site.    Visitors are being routed via back entrance.  Intersections are signed.  Additional access in and out of the park is through Scenic Drive, to Powerline Road to Otterville Blacktop or Route 3/ 109.   The Equestrian Concessionaire is closed due to flooding.  Please contact the Visitor Center at 618-786-2555 for further updates. The Visitor Center hours of operation are Monday thru Saturday 8:30am - 4:00pm.  Approximately 125 yards of the Sam Vadalabene bike trail are closed and barricaded due to the collapse of a Windsor retaining wall.  The site has been cleaned and debris removed; however, the soil and wall are unstable. The Class A Camp Ground Shower House is open.
    • Randolph County CA - the equestrian trails are open for the season.
    • Sand Ridge State Forest –  All trails, campgrounds and day use areas are open with the exception of the snow mobile trails, which are closed due to lack of snow.  Please call the office for daily trail updates after 9am:  309-597-2212 
    • Sanganois - the main access road is closed due to the flooding; however, there are several areas to launch boats.
    • Sangchris Lake -  All campgrounds and access areas, including the fish cleaning station are open.  The Dump station at Deer Run is not in service.
    • Siloam Springs – The equestrian trails along with the campground are open;   Hickory campground has re-opened.
    • Washington County CA - the shower house is open
    • Weinberg King State Park – The equestrian trails are open.​

 Region 5 - Southern Illinois

    • Beall Woods State Park – Tuliptree is open. White Oak upland is open and the bottomland is closed. Schneck, Sweet Gum and Ridgeway are closed due to high water.
    • Fort Defiance - is closed due to high water. 
    • Fort Massac – The 1802 American Fort will be closed to the public until further notice. Due to the flooding of the Ohio River, the upland game road that connects the park to the bike trail and hunting area is closed.
    • Giant City State Park – The shower building in the Equestrian campground is closed.
    • Golconda Marina –  Rauchfuss Hill is currently closed.
    • Newton Lake – The mountain bike trail is closed indefinitely due to washed out areas.​
