  • Two hunters in a blindTracking Public Opinion

Through the Human Dimensions Research Program of the Illinois Natural History Survey, DNR annually reaches out to more than 5 percent of all hunters, and more from specific groups (almost 8 percent of waterfowl hunters). Input is not restricted to sportsmen, as each year more than 10,000 homeowners and landowners are provided the opportunity to express their attitudes toward wildlife management in Illinois.

If you are selected to take part in this important effort, please take a few minutes and complete the questionnaire. Both you and the wildlife in Illinois will benefit from your input.

Earth Day in the Parks is an event to promote stewardship of our natural resources by Illinois school children. During April and May, students and their teachers from throughout Illinois will come to participating Illinois state parks to take part in natural resources stewardship activities. Students will learn that their actions can make a difference in the world. Applications are accepted from January 1 through February 28. Winners will be selected on March 1. Cache River State Natural Area is situated in southernmost Illinois within a floodplain carved long ago by glacial floodwater of the Ohio River. Among the outstanding natural features found within the area today are massive cypress trees whose flared bases, called buttresses, exceed 40 feet circumference. Many are more than 1,000 years old, including one that has earned the title of state champion bald cypress.

Visitors can canoe the Lower Cache River through the magnificent cypress-tupelo swamp, or visit The Barkhausen-Cache River Wetlands Vistor Center to learn about the history of the Cache River wetlands
